Fire Extinguisher Ratings Explained 

It’s not just about the purchase you are making the first considerations should be to understand the ratings that are on the fire extinguisher. 

The letters (A, B, C) are an indication of either a type & or class of fire that the fire extinguisher is made to put out (solid combustibles, flammable liquid, gases). 

The numbers are an indication of the extinguisher's capability to putting out a fire in that class of fire (e.g. “4A 144B” versus “2A 55B”). As a general rule the higher the number the more capable the fire extinguisher will be. 

For example, a fire extinguisher weighing 4 kg and having a fire rating of (2A 55B) would indicate that it was capable of putting out a set amount of wood-based fire and liquid fire - it is not meaningless, but it is small; it simply means that 55 represents a fire extinguishing capability using the 4 kg class of a fire extinguisher. A fire extinguisher rating of (4A 144B), and having a fire class of 4 kg, would mean that it would have a capacity of dealing with much more fire.
